We arrived at Herrington Harbour North in Deale, Maryland at about 6pm this evening after a 4-1/2 day voyage.  We rounded Cape Hatteras yesterday afternoon, and then entered the Chesapeake Bay shortly after midnight this morning.  It was interesting (and occasionally stresful) entering the Chesapeake in the middle of the night, but with the help of good charts, radar, and radio, it all went pretty smoothly.

It’s nice to have a voyage of this magnitude successfully completed, but there’s also a part of me that’s sad it’s over.  We settled into a voyaging routine during the last four days that I can envision continuing for a couple weeks when necessary (i.e., during future ocean crossings). You can see pictures of the voyage here; some highlights of the journey include:

  • Daily dolphin sightings as they surf our sub-surface bow wave.
  • Many flying fish, some of which found their way into our cockpit after an errant flight.
  • Grilling off the back of the boat in calm waters, watching a beautiful sunset.
  • Realizing that this boat can take alot more than mother nature threw at her during this trip.

We will make Herrington Harbour our home base during the next 2-1/2 months, after which we’ll head south, planning to spend the winter in the Carribbean.  While we’re here in the Chesapeake Bay we’re planning to take several weekend trips to different destinations.  St. Michaels and Oxford are two spots that we’ve heard very nice things about, and we’ll also visit Solomons Island for a Trawler Fest in September.  We’ll also take this time to finish outfitting and furnishing the boat as our home, and of course, try to get used to living on a boat full time.  It’s a whole new world!
