Location: Off The Coast Of America
The engine revved up, the lines were untied, the controls went on, and we pushed off of land. It was the start of the first overnight crossing for the Three@Sea crew. Within only a few hours, we were several miles offshore and going 6 knots. The pilothouse was a great place to be at this time. You would look out and see nothing but calm seas and clear skies. I did school, mom and dad alternated a 6-hour watch (they slept in-between, for two nights out at sea, staying awake, and listening to the radio can be tiring). Even I stood my very first watch.
This consists of checking the controls, recording data, and, (yuck) checking the engine room. Ok, the engine room is really cool. But at 110 degrees with the engine booming, it loses all coolness. You check the fuel filters, the main engine, the fuel gauges, and, of course, the bottom of the room for any leaks. It takes about 1 minute, but, boy, are you glad to come out!
I have to say, being out in the ocean at night is really fun. You watch movies, work on your computer, read, or play games. Plus, sleeping on the “honey bunk” is super awesome. Bottom line? Overnights are my new favorite parts of boating.
