When we were cruising down from Maryland, we were often the largest boat in the marina at 43 feet. Well, since we reached the Bahamas, not anymore. Actually, we are consistently the smallest boat in the marinas or anchorages by about 80 feet. This is called the Mega Yacht Syndrome. I don’t really mind, for being able to be near these boats and watch everything happening on them is almost as fun as living on one! Most of the yachts have a dingy (or as they say, tender) the size of our boat! Off the back of these boats are kayaks, wave runners, rafts, sometimes two tenders, and a bunch of other water toys. All of them are really cool. When we are in marinas or anchorages with them, I can see the people enjoying cocktails on the deck, or eating dinner in the cockpit.
However luxurious living on one might be, it is actually not that that appeals to me. I would want to work on one! We can see the crew (captain, mates, chef, and steward) working away on the yachts. Lets just cover this: You don’t have to worry about financing the boat, you get to meet new people, travel, wear those cute uniforms, and do a little work in return. Sounds pretty good! I have made myself a steward on our boat for the time being. We see stewards at work all the time, and it seems like a decent job to have on a mega yacht!
Here are some different jobs on yachts:
Chef: The chef prepares breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, and snacks. Power mega yachts have open kitchens, but sail boat mega yachts have smaller, down below kitchens. People on mega yachts normally don’t eat just a peanut butter sandwich for lunch :).
Captain: The captain has the biggest job. He has to drive the boat and make sure it gets everywhere safely. From what I know, he is the most respected member of the crew (there is a reason for that).
Mates: The mates are the helpers to the captains. They have jobs like planning the route, washing the boat, doing mechanics, getting the toys out, driving the dingy, and helping the captain with his jobs. There are often several mates (1st, 2nd, 3rd…).
Steward: This job sounds like most fun to me. You serve everything, as well as act as a guide in the towns. Whenever anyone wants something, you get it for them. It is a simple job, but you get to meet a lot of people and appear at dinners and parties.
