In case you don’t have a 12 year-old keeping you up-to-date on the latest lingo, a “shout out” is a postive comment about someone or something. So, I’d like to give a “shout out” to the people of Rock Sound. Rock sound is located towards the southern end of Eleuthera on the west side. This community has been hit hard by several hurricanes over the years, and is working hard to rebuild itself and attract cruising boats.
We spent a couple of windy nights (so what else is new) anchored at the north end of the settlement near the 4 Points bar and restaurant (holding was excellent, and good protection from all but the west). 4 Points (recognizable by the thatched roof gazebo and small dock) is currently being run by a family, many of whom worked at the Atlantis. Everyone is super friendly and ready to help. We happen to be anchored there during the Academy Awards, which Ayla wanted to see. They normally close at 9:30, but several members of the family insisted they were staying to watch it and we were more than welcome to join them. We were all there until well past midnight. Mom does the cooking, and her cracked conch is some of the best we have had in the Bahamas, tender and crisp. There is a nice grocery store, well stocked hardware store, and auto parts store within walking distance of their dingy dock. Currently no water or laundry facilities, but they hope to have internet up and running by mid-March. All of the people in the stores are truly friendly, pleasant, and glad you’re there. If you go, be sure to stop by and say hi to Michelle who runs a small school and office supply store, she’s really sweet.
